About the author

I'm not a doctor - I'm a wellness writer who tests every routine I recommend

I've spent nine years writing about food, energy and everyday habits for The Vantage Journal. I'm not a physician and I don't claim to be one - I'm a nutrition enthusiast who reads the research, tries things properly, and writes down what actually held up in real mornings, not just in theory.

When readers asked how I support my own energy through long deadline weeks, I started keeping notes. This column is the result: a plain account of habits, a coffee blend called Wellaray Coffee that I now enjoy most mornings, and the honest caveats that go with any of it.

Everyday energy checklist

Five small habits I check off before 9am

None of these are rules. They're the handful of ordinary habits that, together, seem to keep my energy and mood steadier across a working day - simple habits for a balanced lifestyle, nothing more dramatic than that.

  • 1

A glass of water on waking

Before coffee, before email - just water, to start the day hydrated.

  • 2

A short walk, even ten minutes

Outdoors if I can manage it. It wakes me up more reliably than my phone screen does.

  • 3

    A mindful, unrushed breakfast

Sitting down properly, rather than eating standing at the counter.

  • 4

    One warm, grounding drink

Usually a sachet of Wellaray Coffee stirred into warm water or milk.

  • 5

    A consistent bedtime

Same-ish time each night. Unglamorous, and it makes the biggest difference of the five.

Reader experiences

What other readers told us about their mornings

Five out of five star rating

"I started with the water-and-walk habit first, then added the coffee blend a few weeks later. My mornings feel less foggy - that's really all I can say, and that's enough for me."

- Priya, London

Five out of five star rating

"It's become part of my breakfast, not a separate ritual. I like that it doesn't ask me to change my whole diet overnight."

- Callum, Leeds

Five out of five star rating

"Taste is pleasant and it fits my existing coffee habit. Delivery was quick and the returns process was straightforward when I paused an order."

- Anah, Bristol

How to enjoy Wellaray Coffee

My actual weekday routine, step by step

1

Boil the kettle

While the kettle heats, I lay out breakfast - nothing elaborate, usually oats or toast.

2

Stir one sachet into warm water or milk

One sachet of Wellaray Coffee dissolved in about 150ml of warm water or milk, stirred for a few seconds.

3

Sit down for breakfast

I drink it slowly alongside breakfast, rather than rushing it out the door.

4

Keep the rest of the day ordinary

No special programme after that - normal meals, normal activity, same as always.

Myths vs facts

What affects metabolism as we age - sorting myth from fact

Myth

"You have to starve yourself to feel more energetic."

Fact

Regular, balanced meals tend to support steadier energy than skipping meals does.

Myth

"There's one magic fix for metabolism."

Fact

Sleep, activity, hydration and diet all play a part - a supplement can only complement those habits, never replace them.

Myth

"Metabolism only slows down because of hormones or menopause, and nothing helps."

Fact

Metabolism naturally shifts with age and life stage for many reasons, including activity levels and sleep - simple daily habits still make a noticeable difference.

Myth

"More caffeine always means more energy."

Fact

Hydration, routine and a balanced breakfast usually matter more than simply drinking more coffee.
